Resolute Square: A new tool in our fight against the MAGA right

Last year, when I joined The Lincoln Project, I wrote the below in USA TODAY:

Every American, every corporation, the news media and the social platforms need to understand that there are no longer two functioning political parties in our country. Straddling between them is failing to understand our circumstances and the threat of an authoritarian movement that seeks to take power by any means. It’s time for all Americans to join this fight. Not one party over another. But all Americans against an authoritarian movement and its poison until it dies and another generation of Americans ensures that our democracy lives. 

Over the past 18 months, I’ve been proud to help take on the authoritarian movement - this year, we’ve won 16 of the 22 key races we deemed “existential” to democracy (and counting) - as well as build a true pro-democracy coalition, with over 62,000 volunteers and nearly 100 pro-democracy partner organizations, from local to national.

But as we got closer and closer to Election Day this year, it was clear too many in the news media still don’t get it. How many organizations were taken in by the BS narrative of the “red wave” (which if you listen to our podcast, we called BS on over a year ago)? How many fell for the fake polls flooding the zone - many of which were 10+ points off? And of course, too many tried to straddle the line while Fox News and the right-wing outrage machine continued, unchallenged. This is the outrage machine the MAGA right has spent 40+ years and billions building.

Trump’s back. He’s back on Twitter, where the lunacy grows by the day. Those fighting for democracy had a very strong year in 2022 at the ballot — but the fight is not over.

It’s clear to me that a new outlet is needed to take the fight to FOX, Breitbart, and the rest of the right-wing outrage machine. That’s why I’m proud to announce that in addition to my work with The Lincoln Project, I’m joining Rick, Reed, Stuart, and others to launch Resolute Square, a truly pro-democracy network. We’ll be joined by others who know just how important this fight is.

There is no “both sides” to democracy. I hope you’ll join me as we build this new tool to take on the MAGA machine.

We’re launching Resolute Square because it’s time to take the fight beyond where another political organization can go. We have to challenge the outrage machine and give the movement we’ve built a true pro-democracy outlet.

To quote my piece from last year once more:

We will succeed if the American people come to understand the threat and the danger and join in the pro-democracy coalition to defeat it.  Each of us, in our own way, can and must do our part.   

We saw what we could do together in 2022. It’s never been more true today.
